About Dr. Heil
Dr. Sebastian Heil is a tenured Senior Researcher in the Distributed and Self-organizing Systems Group at Chemnitz University of Technology. His work centers on Web Engineering, with a particular focus on Trustworthy and Human-centric AI-driven methodologies for analyzing and designing web user interfaces, advancing web-based frontend technologies, and exploring interaction paradigms within the Web of Things and Conversational User Interfaces.
Leveraging his expertise in Applied AI, Software Engineering, and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), he investigates innovative approaches to shaping, implementing, and evaluating user interfaces—paving the way for a future where humans and AI collaboratively create and interact within the next generation of the Web.
Dr. Heil has engaged in collaborative research through multiple research stays at the National University of La Plata (UNLP), Argentina, working with the group led by Prof. Gustavo Rossi, and at the University of Nottingham (UoN), UK, contributing to research efforts led by Prof. Steven Furnell.
He is a frequent reviewer for various conferences and journals, including ACM Transactions on the Web (TWEB), the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction (IJHCI), the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing (TAC), Behaviour & Information Technology (BIT), the Journal of Systems and Software (JSSOFTWARE) and the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (TMM). He has also served as a reviewer and program committee member for numerous conferences, including ICWE, EICS, and WWW. He is an elected member of the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Computer Science of Chemnitz University of Technology since 2022 and serves as a member of the University Library Committee. From 2021 to 2024 he was a member of the Institutional Review Board (Ethikkommission).
Dr. Heil is involved in organizing several scientific events, including the National HCI conference Mensch und Computer (MuC) 2025 as Local Co-Chair, the International Workshop on Secure, Trustworthy, and Robust AI (STRAI 2025 and STRAI 2026) at the ARES conference as Workshop Co-Chair, the ENFIELD AI Summer School 2026 as Chairman, and the ENFIELD AI Summer School 2025 as Program Co-Chair. Additionally, he co-led the scientific program of the International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE) 2024 as PC Co-Chair alongside Prof. Maristella Matera from Politecnico di Milano, Italy.
