Research Interests

Martin's research interests focus on Web engineering, software engineering, and systems engineering and is driven by evolution, federation, and reuse as principles for building distributed systems, especially in the context of Internet and Web. His research agenda is reflected by the Mission and Vision statements of his group VSR

Short CV

Since October 2007, Martin Gaedke is a Full Professor of Computer Science at Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany and owner of the professorship for Distributed and Self-organizing Computer Systems (VSR).
Prior to that position, he was a senior scientist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and managing and leading the IT-Management and Web Engineering research group at the Institute of Telematics at the University of Karlsruhe. He also managed Web projects and consulting activities with focus on Internet and WWW technologies at the Telecooperation Office, a third-party funded know-how transfer group.

Martin has been working on Web Engineering since 1996; he is co-founder of the WebComposition approach, which is one of the first reuse-oriented Web Engineering approaches for the development and evolution of distributed Web-based solutions. Since 1997, he has been responsible for the WebComposition program, and developed together with his teams and partners, including Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft Research, Agilent, and SAP, several reference implementations, supporting systems, models, and processes applying the core-ideas of the WebComposition approach. Currently, he is working on the 4th generation, which focuses on the composition of solutions applying federated Identity (Single Sign On across organizational borders and other aspects), managed SOA, data grid services, and concepts like open linked data and paper trail.

Besides, he developed curricular materials for Web Engineering lecture courses and practical courses. The material is in use at different universities in Germany. The work has been awarded by Microsoft Research – Academic Alliance Curriculum Program.

Martin is the Chairman of the International Society for Web Engineering, Managing Editor of the Journal of Web Engineering (JWE), and member of the editorial boards of Journals on eLearning and Web Information Systems.

He has published more than 90 scientific papers in international conferences, journals, and books. Martin was co-author of one of the first papers on Web Engineering (WWW6 conference in 1997) and has published in various journals including IEEE Internet Computing, Netnomics Journal, Journal of Web Engineering, Computer Networks and ISDN Systems, GI Softwaretechnik-Trends, International Journal of Web Information Systems, Australian Journal of Information Systems. As a panellist, he spoke on the future of Web development at different conferences and workshops including WWW, CAiSE, ICSE and IWWOST.

Within his scientific activities, he was Program Co-Chair of the 5th International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE2005) and chaired the Web Engineering tracks at the International World Wide Web Conference 2002, 2003, 2004, WWW2008. He has been serving on more than 100 program committees for national and international workshops and conferences. He is member of the IEEE Computer society, ACM, GI, SIGWEB, and International Society for Web Engineering. Martin was an invited expert for the 7th Framework workshop (FP7) of the European Commission on Web Science. He has been scientific reviewer for Funding Organizations and National Science Foundations, including IWT-Flanders (Belgium), Marsden Fund (the Royal Society of New Zealand), and Swiss NSF.

Martin obtained a Master's degree in computer science in 1997 and a doctoral degree in engineering, on the subject of "Component-based technology for development and evolution of applications in the WWW", in 2000, both from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany.
