One of the Gordian knots within region- and nation-crossing cooperations is how to securely and effectively manage digital identities and accesses control based on existing infrastructures and heterogeneous network environments. The project “New York” will utilize standards to design and implement a federated identity management solution to enable cross domain single sign on, including ID-FF (Identity Federation Framework) and SAML 2.0 (Security Assertion Markup Language). Combining identity life cycle (creation, propagation, management, termination) it will be given a security analysis about the organizational processes of identity management. Furthermore several different strong authentication mechanisms will be described to enhance the protection of digital credentials.
