Abstract
The increasing complexity of web-based systems necessitates intuitive, specialised modelling tools. The WebComposition Architecture Model (WAM) provides a formal notation for modelling web systems across organisational boundaries, with explicit support for federation and modelling of trust relationships. However, to date, WAM lacks dedicated tool support, forcing software architects to use general-purpose diagramming tools, which can be challenging and complex. This paper presents WAMflow, a web-based diagram editor designed explicitly for supporting the creation and editing of WAM diagrams. The editor enables Web Engineers to visually design federated web architectures in the browser and allows to export diagrams for sharing and documentation purposes. In a usability study based on the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) we observed high attractiveness, efficiency, and clarity ratings. Participants’ qualitative feedback provided valuable additional insights from which we derive directions for future improvements in this paper.
