Abstract

Today more than ever, the World Wide Web offers a global platform for applications that have a major impact on our society. With an increasing number of tasks to be supported comes a vital need for systematic approaches to the development process. This contrasts today’s unsystematic practice, with the vast majority of Web applications being developed in an ad-hoc fashion. As a research discipline, Web Engineering actively promotes systematic, disciplined and quantifiable approaches towards successful development of high-quality, ubiquitously usable Web-based solutions. The fast pace of Web developments that can currently be witnessed has rendered the need for Web Engineering more apparent than ever. Such changes apply particularly to the way the Web is now used: in a collaborative fashion, through seamless interaction models, and with the help of technologies that are collectively referred to as Web 2.0. This development also reflects in the workshops that are collocated with the Eighth International Conference on Web Engineering, and which attracted a number of quality contributions in this particular area. - The Seventh International Workshop on Web-Oriented Software Technologies (IWWOST'08) continues its line in discussing different software technologies within the context of Web Engineering, this year addressing the impact of Web 2.0 technologies on the development process. The event is organized by Luis Olsina, Oscar Pastor, Gustavo Rossi, Daniel Schwabe and Marco Winckler. - The Third International Workshop on Adaptation and Evolution in Web Systems Engineering (AEWSE'08) discusses aspects of flexibility in Web system functionality and lifecycle that are brought up by applying such new technologies. The workshop is organized by Sven Casteleyn, Florian Daniel and Geert-Jan Houben. Our gratitude goes to the workshops’ organizers for their dedicated effort to provide a high-quality selection of papers, as well as of course to the authors who submitted their papers. We sincerely hope that the workshop programs trigger interesting discussions, provide new insights to the attendees and will positively influence future research.
