Educational Programs

VSR's educational program is based on three foundations. For the early beginning we provide what we call basic knowledge, i.e. an introduction to internet and web technologies. Later on, our students learn about topics that businesses require today or in the near future - i.e. they learn to develop a Market-oriented tool, skill set - most important they learn how to learn in the fast moving area of internet and web technologies. Furthermore, our students can learn about recent research findings and as such improve their tool and skill set in the Masters programs. Being equipped with these tool and skill sets for distributed solutions in the internet and most prominent the web, as well as knowledge and habits for the digital society, our students are well prepared to become tomorrow's talents.

The professorship and its educational programs are internationally aligned and linked in order to meet the requirements of today's global knowledge society.

The professorship offers the following 7 courses:

Computer Networks

Computer Networks

Rechnernetze
The use of modern information technology and networked computer systems has spread to almost all areas of everyday life. The course covers the underlying concepts and principles of telematics as well as the basics of computer networks' design.

XML

XML

Former: XML Tools
eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is the basis of a number of developments in the World Wide Web. The course provides a basic introduction to XML and its applications in different contexts of distributed systems.

Design of Distributed Systems

Design of Distributed Systems

Entwurf Verteilter Systeme
The course provides an introduction to the "Web phenomenon" and development of distributed applications and systems. The focus here lies on the development process and evolution, i.e. the continuous development of the underlying requirements, architectures and technologies.

Security of Distributed Software (former Security of Distributed Systems)

Security of Distributed Software (former Security of Distributed Systems)

Sicherheit Verteilter Software (ehem. Sicherheit Verteilter Systeme)
The course focuses of the problem of security in computer networks and application systems connected to those. Various attack possibilities and vulnerabilities will be demonstrated in order to discuss the according security concepts.

Software Service Engineering

Software Service Engineering

Former: Protocols of Distributed Systems
Recently, computer and communication networks have developed into an efficient work tool, a universal source of information and a nearly ubiquitous communication medium. Basic approaches, concepts and principles of modern communication and computer networks will be explored in-depth.

Cloud & Web Applications (former Management of Distributed Systems)

Cloud & Web Applications (former Management of Distributed Systems)

Cloud & Web Anwendungen (ehem. Management Verteilter Systeme)
The course deals with architectures, models, principles, protocols and tools for managing and monitoring distributed systems, as well as their operation approaches. To this end, both technical solutions and appropriate management strategies are considered.

Current Trends in Web Engineering

Current Trends in Web Engineering

Former: Social Media & Web Science/Architecture of Distributed Systems
Social media and social networks in the sense of cross-border networks change our perception of communication structures and induce social, economic and political changes. The module explores the basic aspects of social networks and social media as well as web science. Architectural aspects, system theory and emergence-related phenomena such as self-organisation will be covered.
